Synopsis

Waris (1979) is one of the great social dramas of Pakistani television — a sweeping, morally serious portrait of a feudal family in the grip of slow dissolution. Written by the poet and dramatist Amjad Islam Amjad and directed by Shahzad Khalil, the drama traced the consequences of entrenched hierarchy, inherited power, and the human cost of a world that refuses to change. Talat Hussain's commanding performance in the lead role gave the drama its psychological weight, and the full ensemble brought remarkable depth to a story that was as much about a dying social order as it was about the individuals caught within it. Waris was ambitious in scope and serious in intent at a time when Pakistani drama was still establishing its ambitions, and it helped prove that the medium was capable of tackling the largest questions of its society.
