Biography
Uzma Gillani is one of the most formidable and enduring figures in the history of Pakistani television — an actress of extraordinary range and authority whose work across four decades earned her the unofficial title of the Iron Lady of Pakistani drama. Born in Meerut in 1945 and raised in Pakistan following Partition, she began her career with PTV in the late 1960s and rose to prominence with her powerful portrayal of Zakiya in Waris (1979), a performance of such psychological complexity and physical presence that it became one of the defining female characterisations of the medium's golden era. She received the Pride of Performance award in 1982 — the highest civilian honour for an artist in Pakistan — in recognition of a career that had already proven itself exceptional. Her gift was for characters of will and consequence: women who occupied the centres of their narratives rather than the margins, who made things happen rather than simply responding to events around them. The Government of Pakistan has named a street and intersection in Lahore in her honour, a rare tribute that speaks to the depth of her contribution to the national culture.
