About This Drama
Uncle Urfi (1974–1977) was Anwar Maqsood's most sustained character study — a comedy series built entirely around a single, precisely imagined personality and the ripple effects of that personality on everyone around him. Qavi Khan's portrayal of the avuncular, opinionated, and perpetually self-satisfied Uncle Urfi became one of the most recognisable characters in Pakistani television history, a comic creation of sufficient depth and consistency to sustain a multi-year run without diminishment. The series demonstrated Maqsood's gift for character-based comedy at its most refined: situations emerged organically from who Uncle Urfi was rather than being imposed upon him from outside. It remains among the most fondly remembered programmes of PTV's formative years.
