Synopsis
Marvi (1994) was one of the most significant social dramas of PTV's later golden period — a story rooted in the realities of rural Sindh and the particular vulnerability of women within systems of feudal power and entrenched custom. Written by Amjad Islam Amjad from a screenplay of considered moral seriousness, the drama placed its protagonist's dignity and resistance at the centre of a narrative that refused to soften the structural injustices it portrayed. Samina Peerzada brought enormous conviction to the title role, and the drama as a whole achieved a quality of social realism that was relatively rare in the entertainment landscape of its time. Marvi demonstrated that PTV drama at its best was capable of taking seriously the lives of those on the margins of Pakistani society, and doing so without condescension or sentimentality.
