Synopsis

Khuda Ki Basti (1969) holds a unique place in the cultural history of Pakistan as one of the earliest and most socially serious dramas produced by PTV. Adapted from Shaukat Siddiqui's landmark Urdu novel of the same name, the drama brought to the screen a portrait of urban poverty, moral corruption, and human resilience in Karachi's lower depths with an honesty and compassion that was groundbreaking for its time. The source novel was itself a foundational text of Urdu progressive literature, and the television adaptation carried forward its conviction that the lives of the poor deserved to be portrayed on their own terms, with dignity and without melodramatic distortion. Khuda Ki Basti established at the very beginning of PTV's history that Pakistani television could aspire to the seriousness of the finest literature it drew upon.
